Ask Dr. Jan
Dear Dr. Jan,
What do you do if you become pregnant and don't want your parents to know and the guy you're pregnant by doesn't want you anymore? Can I handle raising the baby myself?
— Jovanna
Dear Jovanna,
While it is certainly possible that you could handle raising the baby by yourself, it will be an extremely difficult and challenging task. Even with a supportive family and father, being a teen parent is tough. You should seek the advice of a health professional to ensure that you and the baby are in good health and to explore your options. If you decide to have the baby on your own, it will be important for you to know what services are available in your community. Consider contacting a social worker or counselor at your school to find out about available teen parent support and educational services. You can also contact your local social services department to find out what they offer.
Even though it may be very challenging, you may want to reconsider telling your parents. Chances are they are going to find out eventually as your pregnancy continues and of course once you give birth and have your baby. If you are determined to raise your child, you will really benefit from your parents' help and support during the challenging times ahead.
