Ask Dr. Jan

Dear Dr. Jan,

I'm dealing with depression and my parents want me to live at some house with other kids like me. How do I deal with that?

— Katrina

Dear Katrina,

Depression can be very challenging to deal with, particularly as a teenager. Depending on how severe the depression is, the treatment can vary from meeting with a mental health counselor once a week, to being in a residential facility that provides a variety of services and staff to help patients deal with significant emotional challenges. The decision as to what level of treatment is necessary depends on a number of factors. The most important factor is safety. If someone is so depressed that they are considering harming themselves in some way, then a higher level of service like a hospital or other residential facility is necessary.

Similarly, if someone’s depression prevents him or her from functioning at home or in school, then an effective treatment plan needs to be developed. This might include meeting regularly with a counselor, taking antidepressant medication, getting involved in an ongoing support group, being placed in a residential facility, or some combination of these treatment options. The first step is a thorough assessment by a mental health professional.

While it is difficult to know what your unique situation is, it sounds like you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed with your parents’ idea of trying a residential program. If you’re already seeing a counselor or therapist, it is important that you share your concerns with him or her. If you’re not seeing someone, you may want to talk to your parents about finding a therapist that you would be able to work with to help you deal with your depression. Even if you go to a residential program, you will need a counselor to work with when you get out. A mental health professional can advocate for you in terms of the appropriate level of treatment that you need.

The most important thing is getting the treatment you need to help you reduce your symptoms of depression and improve the quality of your life.
