Leading Urban School Districts to Offer Award-Winning Teen Health and Wellness Database

Chicago, Denver, Oakland, and Milwaukee Recognize Teen Health and Wellness as a Critical Tool for Students, Teachers, and Health Services Staff

NEW YORK CITY, NY – August 4, 2008 – Rosen Publishing is pleased to announce the selection of Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers by several urban school districts for integration into health, fitness, and family life curricula and as a reference and support resource for their middle and high school students. Chicago Public Schools (IL), Denver Public Schools (CO), Oakland Unified School District (CA), and Milwaukee Public Schools (WI) join a growing list of over 2,000 public and private schools and public libraries across the country that recognize Teen Health & Wellness as an important self-help and homework help tool for their communities.

“When Chicago Public Schools was introduced to the Teen Health & Wellness database from Rosen, we were impressed with the quality and variety of the information, the look of the Web site, and the ease of navigation,” states Paul Whitsitt, director of libraries and information services at Chicago Public Schools. “Our health education experts enthusiastically approved the content, and we saw that it would meet student needs for both school assignments and personal exploration.” Over 100,000 Chicago secondary students will have access to Teen Health & Wellness when the 2008-2009 school year begins.

Ann Mayo Gallagher, district librarian, reports that after weeks of input from site librarians using a trial subscription, Oakland Unified School District decided to subscribe to Teen Health & Wellness for its 37 middle schools and high schools. “It is a great product that will be used to fill a niche in the information market that teens need and want,” states Gallagher. “The price is affordable, the interface is inviting, the teacher resources are well done, and the possibilities are all there to support quality information searching. It will be great having this resource for our students.”

Since Teen Health & Wellness launched in 2007, Rosen Publishing continues to add features to the award-winning database, most recently including customizable Hotlines, RSS feed capability, and expanded reading lists. Teen Health & Wellness has received critical acclaim and won numerous awards, including being voted a 2007 Top 10 Digital Resource by School Library Journal and a "Must Have" Product for Fall 2008, being selected as one of Library Journal’s Best Reference Sources of 2007, and being named Best New Product, 2007 Readers’ Choice Awards by The Charleston Advisor. The database has also been honored with an EDDIE (Annual Education Software Review) Award, an Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) Distinguished Achievement Award, a World Wide Web Health Award, and a Best Educational Software (BESSIE) Award.

Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers from Rosen Publishing delivers the content most important to the heaviest users of public libraries—young adults

Pew Study results indicate that when it comes to questions about health, careers, and public services, 21% of American young adults turn to their public library

NEW YORK CITY, NY – January 5, 2008 – According to a joint study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, young adults are the most likely to use libraries in the future when they encounter problems: 40% of Gen Y (ages 18-30) said they would do so. This important user group also listed a number of topics they are most likely to need information for, including health issues, career concerns, and help with legal information on immigration, public services, and voting.

Education-related tasks—making decisions about schooling, paying for it, and getting job training—are among the most common problems drawing people to libraries. Twenty-one percent of Americans with such questions aged 18-30 have turned to public libraries compared with about 12 percent of the general adult population. Despite the ease with which they can access information over the Internet from the comforts of their homes, young adults are the still among the heaviest users of public libraries.

Rosen Publishing’s Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers directly addresses the needs of this sizeable library user group. By providing well researched, current, and on-target information on health and wellness topics in virtually every area of high interest, Teen Health & Wellness is the go-to resource for your library’s young adult users. With topics as diverse as acne and Alzheimer’s, military recruitment and volunteerism, and adoption and cyberbullying, users will find themselves returning to Teen Health & Wellness again and again to find answers to their questions. And with over 40 national hotlines available across fourteen categories, including AIDS/HIV and mental health, Teen Health & Wellness provides resources for those users with the most critical and urgent needs.

Unlike information casually culled from the Internet, all content in Teen Health & Wellness is reviewed by a team of leading professionals across fields including medicine, mental health, nutrition, substance abuse prevention, guidance, and career counseling. To ensure its accuracy and relevance, all content is reviewed and updated on an ongoing basis. Standards of editorial integrity mandate that each entry includes the date it was last updated, so your users can be assured of the currency and accuracy of the content.

Available both in the library and remotely, Rosen Publishing’s Teen Health & Wellness is the one resource for your young adult users that shows them you care about their concerns, and provides answers that you can stand by—contact us today for 30-day free trial to see for yourself.

Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers wins The Charleston Advisor’s 2007 Readers’ Choice Award for Best New Product

NEW YORK CITY, NY – November 27, 2007 – Rosen Publishing is pleased to announce that The Charleston Advisor (TCA) has selected the Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers electronic database as the winner of its Best New Product award, calling it “a terrific product that meets an important need of a critical group.” This is the seventh year for the Readers’ Choice award series which recognizes the best and worst electronic services and databases of interest to libraries.

When Teen Health & Wellness was reviewed by TCA in April 2007, it received an almost perfect score, 4 ¾ stars out of a possible five. The review notes that, in Teen Health & Wellness, “teen-friendly articles make complex topics understandable and thoroughly easy to use for both personal and curricular needs. They also give insight into the teen experience—crucial for parents, teachers, librarians, therapists, and others who are part of teens’ lives and who support teens.” A complete list of the Readers’ Choice Awards can be found at http://www.charlestonco.com.

Miriam Gilbert, Rosen Publishing’s Director of Electronic Sales and Marketing, underscores the importance of this most recent recognition, since the awards are named by the TCA editorial board which includes notable academic librarians and electronic resource experts such as Barbara Quint, editor of Searcher Magazine. “We have been delighted with the market-wide confirmation of the excellence of Teen Health & Wellness,” states Gilbert. “The database was also honored earlier this fall with an EDDIE Award from ComputED Gazette and Learning Center, which recognized it as an outstanding Life Skills Website in the high school category, and noted its ability to augment the classroom curriculum and improve teacher productivity.” With over 500 customers since it was launched in early 2007, Teen Health & Wellness has recently added San Francisco Public Library and the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library to the list.

Rosen Publishing introduces new, powerful customer support tools in Teen Health & Wellness electronic resource

Responding to customer demand, publicly available 24/7 Teen Hotline directory and direct access to “Ask Dr. Jan” now available

NEW YORK CITY, NY – October 11, 2007 – Rosen Publishing is pleased to announce several enhancements to the Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers electronic resource introduced in early 2007. As a service to teens and caregivers, the Teen Health & Wellness national teen Hotline directory has been made available to the general public. Subscribers to Teen Health & Wellness will now have the opportunity to allow their users to submit a question to online expert, Dr. Jan, for consideration and response. Additionally, Rosen Publishing has introduced a bimonthly newsletter specifically for Teen Health & Wellness subscribers, which includes updates on site enhancements, proven promotional and programming ideas, and advice on how to best serve teen users.

“Our customers let us know that making the Teen Health & Wellness Hotline directory available to all teens anywhere with an Internet connection was important to them,” states Miriam Gilbert, Director of Electronic Sales and Marketing, Rosen Publishing. “Our editors have compiled and continue to maintain a list that covers over a dozen areas where teens may need help immediately – depression, teen pregnancy, or school violence, as examples – with national toll-free numbers that any teen in need can use to connect to the appropriate agency.” The Hotline directory can be found at http://www.teenhealthandwellness.com/static/hotlines.

The “Ask Dr. Jan” question and answer component of Teen Health & Wellness has proved immensely popular, and students and teen users quickly indicated that they would like to be able to directly pose questions to Dr. Jan. To accommodate this, licensed institutions will now be able to offer their users the opportunity to submit a question to Dr. Jan Hittelman. Hittelman, a licensed psychologist and Director of Boulder Psychological Services, was recently covered in a Boulder Daily Camera (CO) piece for his unique collaboration with Rosen Publishing. Dr. Jan is part of a “Citizen Therapist” movement which encourages mental health professionals to take a more active role in serving the wider community.

As a service to subscribers, Rosen Publishing has also introduced a Teen Health & Wellness Customer Newsletter. This free, bimonthly newsletter gives Teen Health & Wellness customers the latest news on resource updates, marketing and programming ideas, insights on serving teen users, and more. The inaugural issue can be seen at http://teenhealthfiles.rosenpub.com/newsletter/0907newsletter.html.

The New York Public Library and Phoenix Public Library join the growing list of Teen Health & Wellness database customers

Large urban libraries recognize the importance of making health information readily accessible to teens and young adults

NEW YORK CITY, NY – August 7, 2007 – Rosen Publishing is pleased to announce the launch of its Teen Health & Wellness electronic resource at two of the leading U.S. urban public libraries – The New York Public Library and Phoenix Public Library. Teen Health & Wellness is Rosen’s first online database, and has been garnering outstanding reviews and awards since its initial launch in early 2007.

The New York Public Library was first attracted to Teen Health & Wellness because of its unique tone and content, which has been developed specifically for teenagers. Central to the library’s mission is providing the best online information available with ready access directly to its users. Vetted by experts and continually updated, the Teen Health & Wellness database supports this mission, serving as an authoritative, trusted source. The New York Public Library is also informing other community-based organizations about the availability of this new 24/7 resource. The library is featuring a link to the database from both its TeenLink Web page and the homeworkNYC.org Web site, which is cosponsored with Queens and Brooklyn Public Libraries. The New York Public Library has 2.25 million cardholders, 89 branches, and four research libraries across the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island.

Phoenix Public Library serves a population of 1.5 million, with nearly one-third of those young adults under the age of 18. Recognizing the importance of serving this group, Phoenix Public Library has recently launched a virtual teen space, Blaze, as part of its overall Web site renovation done earlier in 2007. Teen Health & Wellness is one of the databases now featured and available through Blaze, highlighted on both the Teen Life and Homework Help channels. The addition of Teen Health & Wellness to its offerings also supports Phoenix Public Library’s mission to foster an informed and literate community with information resources.

Brooklyn Public Library, Omaha Public Library latest customers to implement Rosen Publishing’s award-winning Teen Health & Wellness resource

Teen library patrons now have a place of their own to go for accurate and up-to-date information on diseases, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, fitness, mental health, diversity, family life, and more

NEW YORK CITY, NY – June 25 2007 – Rosen Publishing is delighted to announce the closing of several key contracts for its award-winning electronic resource for teens, the Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers database. Brooklyn Public Library (NY) and Omaha Public Library (NE) have recently joined the growing list of libraries and school systems which quickly signed on after the inaugural launch in January 2007 at ALA Midwinter. Teen Health & Wellness provides students, librarians and educators with comprehensive curricular support and self-help tools on medical, health and lifestyle topics that are important to young adults and their caregivers.

Douglas County (NE) has the highest STD rate among young people 15-24 years of age in the state of Nebraska. As the primary institution serving the county, Omaha Public Library wanted a resource that would help break the cycle of sexually transmitted diseases. Sarah English, Youth Collection Development Manager at OPL, feels that making the Teen Health & Wellness database available to Douglas County young adults “takes an important step in providing a confidential, up-to-date and teen-accessible resource” in confronting this alarming issue. “We have a great deal of confidence in the editorial staff at Rosen Online, being familiar with their print series on teen health and life skills,” English adds, “and know that teens will find the information in the database accurate and current, as well as presented in a style that they like, and understand.” “Teens are an important part of the library community,” continues Rivkah Sass, Director of Omaha Public Library, “and the day the virtual ink was dry on the contract, Teen Health & Wellness went up on the library’s TeenWeb page. We’ll be featuring it throughout the summer in conjunction with summer reading programs.”

Sheila Schofer, Coordinator of Young Adult Services at Brooklyn Public Library, sees the addition of Teen Health & Wellness to its electronic resources as an important outreach tool. “Teens in Brooklyn sometimes lack access to the resources that would provide them with readily available health information, in either print or electronic format,” she states, “making it all that more important that we supply it. As a Web-based resource, teens can access it from the library, their home or any public workstation. Teen Health & Wellness offers teens solidly researched and always current content on a huge variety of topics that teens are interested in – from life skills like work, education, and money management to health and medical issues such as asthma, sexuality, and nutrition.”

Rosen Publishing continues to expand its award-winning Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers electronic resource

Enhancements include expanded content for educators, librarians and users, standards and curriculum support, and patron education tools

NEW YORK CITY, NY – June 14, 2007 – Rosen Publishing is pleased to announce several major enhancements to its Teen Health & Wellness: Real Life, Real Answers database. Already designated as an award-winning resource (BESSIE 2007 Best Life Skills Web Site, AEP 2007 Distinguished Achievement Award Winner), Teen Health & Wellness provides students, librarians and educators with comprehensive curricular support and self-help tools on topics including diseases, drugs, alcohol, nutrition, fitness, mental health, diversity, family life, and more.  As part of its ongoing editorial process, close to 70% of the database content has been updated since its initial launch in early 2007, with hundreds of new illustrations. The enhancements to Teen Health & Wellness also include a greatly expanded librarian and educator resource center featuring curriculum correlations, a user’s guide, and database promotional materials, useful for marketing the database to teachers, teens and their caregivers.

The Librarian/Educator resource center provides outstanding tools which provide easy access to database usage statistics, useful for public and school libraries, and a matrix which allows educators to correlate Teen Health & Wellness database articles to their state's curriculum standards or the national standards. Young adult librarians can direct teens to the resource center’s Personal Story Project, which offers teens an opportunity to share their personal stories for online publication. To help librarians market the Teen Health & Wellness resource, Rosen Publishing has also made a variety of promotional materials available, from full-color posters to Web banners, customizable and easily downloaded.

Continual content updates are made to the Teen Health & Wellness database, assuring that important breaking news and developments in health and medicine are made available to teens immediately. Since early 2007, over 400 illustrations have been added to this already valuable resource, focusing specifically on medical heath and disease. While many are photographs and diagrams, a large number of high-tech, cutting edge electron micrograph images have been added as well. These support pedagogy and curricular needs, and make complex scientific concepts more easily understandable for teens and their caregivers.

“The response from the education and library market has been overwhelmingly positive,” states Erin Lockledge, Teen Health & Wellness’ Editorial Director, “and teens now have a resource that allows them to get solid, professional advice, confidentially, from wherever they have an Internet connection.” Miriam Gilbert, Rosen Publishing’s Director of Electronic Sales and Marketing, adds that “our customers are the driving force in guiding us in the development and growth of content, both in depth and breadth. Their continuing input is what makes Teen Health & Wellness so unique in its scope, and comprehensive in its coverage.” Leading school districts and libraries in the US such as Appleton Area School District (WI), Fayetteville Public Library (AR), and Jefferson Parish Library (LA) have been among the first subscribers to the database, lauded by School Library Journal in May 2007 as “the front-runner in health information for teenagers and a definite must-have for all high school and public libraries.”

Please visit Rosen Publishing at the upcoming American Libraries Association Annual Conference, Washington DC, June 23-26, 2007, at booth #3202.
